Jones' Last-Second Free Throws Lift Men's Hoops Past Alfred, 72-70

Box  l Updated Stats

ALFRED, N.Y. – Freshman Chris Jones knocked down two free throw with just .2 seconds remaining to propel Nazareth to a 72-70 road victory over Alfred Friday night.

Nazareth has now won three-straight games to move to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in Empire 8 play, while Alfred falls to 5-6 and 1-1, respectively.

In a game where the score was tied a total of 18 times, the Saxons seemed to hold the advantage for a potential last-shot opportunity following a defensive rebound with just :31 seconds remaining and the game tied at 70.

After a timeout, Alfred drained the clock to just six seconds before Eric Adams missed a jumper in the lane.

Nazareth's Brendan Wind was able to grab the rebound and find a streaking Jones past half court behind the defense. Jones was fouled on the layup attempt, before calmy sinking both free throws with .2 seconds on the clock.  The Fulton, NY native finished with a career-high six points.

A desperation heave the length of the court was batted away to help Nazareth preserve the win.

Much like the second half, the first featured back-and-forth action with neither squad holding more than a five point lead.

In the final minute of the half, Nick Nadeau broke a tie at 29 with a 3-pointer, only to have the Saxons respond with a triple of their own.

Tyler Stenglein notched a difficult layup in the closing seconds to give the visitors a 34-32 at the break.

Ford led the way with a game-high 20 points, including going 12-of-17 from the charity stripe.  Stenglein was 7-for-13 for 18 points and three assists.

Nadeua and Wind each finished with eight points.  Maurice Mills chipped in seven points and five boards.

Nazareth will be back on the floor on Saturday, when it will travel to Elmira College for a 5 p.m. matchup.
