Tournament siteUNION N.J. -- Just hours after suffering a tough five-set loss to Rutgers-Newark, Nazareth was back on the volleyball court Saturday and made short work off 11th-ranked Baruch as the Golden Flyers won in three sets during day two of the Clash at Kean. Scores were 25-11, 25-23, 25-19. Shortly after, the Golden Flyers went on to defeat Marymount in three sets. Scores were 25-19, 25-23, 25-22.
Nazareth, ranked third nationally, improved to 6-1 overall.
Senior
Chris Mahan led the Golden Flyers in their match against Baruch. Mahan had nine kills and three blocks. Seniors
Grant Levermore and
Tim Zyburt each had seven kills and Sophomore
Sam Bittker had six. Sophomore setter
Jake Kemp totaled 28 assists and Junior libero
Tom Keisling had 10 digs.
As a team, Nazareth posted a tidy .386 hitting percentage (37-10-70), including a .529 (11-2-17) success rate in the first set, to set the tone. Bittker had three kills in the opening set as the Golden Flyers raced to an 11-2 lead and won easily. Mahan and Zyburt each had five kills in a closer second set. Nazareth never trailed, but Baruch closed to within 24-23, before Nazareth prevailed on a Baruch ball-handling error.
In the third set, Nazareth trailed 12-11, then closed the match on a 14-7 scoring run that included kills by Mahan,
Coulton Every,
Zachary Gillard and Kemp.
Zyburt and Mahan continued to contribute as the Golden Flyers defeated Marymount on Saturday. Zyburt had 12 kills, Mahan had 10. Senior,
Coulton Every tallied 8 kills.
Jake Kemp added 39 assists, while
Tom Keisling had 6 digs for Naz.
The Golden Flyers recorded a .427 hitting percentage (44-9-82) surpassing the previous games success. In the second set, Nazareth hit for .500 (16-2-28).
Nazareth will play their next match and first home match of the season against Keuka College on February 3rd at 7pm.
