Tyler Stenglein scored a career-high 29 points (12-of-23) to push Nazareth to an 84-74 road victory over Stevens Insitute of Technology Friday night. Stenglein's previous career-high of 19 came against D'Youville College on November 13, 2015.
Nazareth moves to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play, while Stevens falls to 7-8 and 3-4, respectively.
In a closely contested first half, each team traded buckets throughout, with neither side opening up more than a four point margin until a late surge from Nazareth broke open the score at the break.
With the score tied at 30 apiece at the 3:43 mark, the Golden Flyers closed out the half on a 13-3 run, including 10 from the hands of Stenglein. The visitors drained two triples during the surge, one apiece from Stenglein and
Nick Nadeau.
Nazareth led the Ducks 43-33 at the break.
In the second half, Nazareth struggled early from the field, going almost five minutes without a basket. Stevens used the poor shooting stretch to take a 45-43 lead.
Stenglein, however, stopped the drought for Nazareth with a layup at the 15:37 mark to help the visitors regain the lead, 46-45, a lead they would not surrender the rest of the game.
The most important stretch for Nazareth came when a 9-0 run ballooned a 61-55 advantage to a 70-55 lead with just over five minutes remaining.
Maurice Mills poured in a layup for Nazareth's largest lead of the game at 74-58, before a small run at the end brought the Ducks to within 10 points.
Mills generated a solid effort with 17 points (6-for-12) and eight boards. Classmate
Mitch Ford registered his 11
th double-double of the season after pouring in 14 points (5-of-10) and grabbing 12 rebounds.
