Updated StatsROCHESTER, N.Y – The Nazareth College women's volleyball used a come-from-behind first set win to spark a straight set sweep of East Avenue rival St. John Fisher College (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) on Wednesday at Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth improves to 11-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the win, while Fisher falls to 8-7, 1-2, respectively.
In the opening set, Fisher led by as many as five points, including at 18-13. The Golden Flyers clawed back to within 21-18 before scoring the final seven points of the set.
Jennifer Hicks and
Carmen Sapp notched two kills apiece on the run.
In the second set, the hosts used a 13-1 run to open up a commanding 20-6 advantage. Hicks began the run with back-to-back kills.
Cady Messmer chipped in nine kills of her own on 13 attempts in the set (.692 attack percentage).
For the final frame Nazareth broke free of a 5-5 lock with a 13-6 run to take an 18-11 advantage and never looked back.
Messmer hit .600 for the day, compiling 16 kills, while also tying for a team-high 10 digs. Freshman Oliva Krick notched 10 digs as well.
Sapp and Hicks registered seven kills apiece while
Celia Cordero collected eight.
Maureen Thayer dished out 30 assists for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth returns to action on Friday and Saturday for the Hartwick Invitational. On Friday, the Golden Flyers take on Coast Guard at 4 p.m and MCLA at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Nazareth squares off against SUNY Delhi and Union at 12 and 4 p.m., respectively.
