Tournament siteROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Nazareth College women's volleyball squad competed at the RIT Tournament on Friday and Saturday, compiling a 3-1 record.
Nazareth opened up the weekend action on Friday with two three set wins over SUNY Geneseo and Buffalo State.
The Golden Flyers defeated the Knights in the opening contest (25-13, 27-25, 25-17). Facing set point in the second, Nazareth managed two straight kills, one from
Cady Messmer and the other from
Kelsey Milligan to even the score at 24. After exchanging points to tie the score at 25, the duo of Milligan and Messmer tacked on a kill apiece to seal the set.
Messmer tallied 12 kills (.370), two blocks and nine digs. Milligan registered seven kills of her own, while
Maureen Thayer dished out 29 assists.
In game 2 on Friday the Golden Flyers handled Buffalo State (25-15, 25-21, 25- 21).
Once again Messmer paced the pack with nine kills while Milligan and Hicks notched five apiece. Thayer had 27 assists and
Olivia Krick mustered 17 digs.
On day two, Nazareth dropped its opening contest 3-0 to Oneonta State (23-25, 22-25, 20-25).
Messmer notched 14 kills and 14 digs in the game.
Margorie Didas and
Jennifer Hicks each chipped in seven kills while Thayer added 38 assists.
In the nightcap contest against Mount St. Mary Nazareth overcame a first set defeat to win (19-25, 26-24, 29-27, 25-18).
Messmer led the way with 16 kills, while also picking up seven aces. Her efforts for the weekend helped her land on the All-Tournament team. Freshman
Carmen Sapp added 10 kills of her own.
Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday when it will travel to Houghton for a 7 p.m. contest to begin Empire 8 play.
