ALBANY, N.Y. -- Junior Brandon Vuolo broke his own school record in the discus Saturday as Nazareth's track and field team competed at the Purple & Gold Last Chance Meet at the University at Albany. Vuolo finished in eighth place with a heave of 42.05 meters (137 feet, 11 inches). He broke his previous mark of 133 feet, 3 inches set at Nazareth;s ROC City Classic April 11.
Vuolo also finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 13.21 meters (43 feet, 4 3/4 inches). Vuolo's teammate, Luis Rivera, finished fourth in the hammer throw on Friday with a distance of 55.56 meters (182 feete, 3 inches) and 10th in the discus at 40.81 meters (133 feet, 11 inches).
Other top performers included junior Khiary Gayle, who placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.94 meters (45 feet, 9 inches); and junior Tom Sippie, who was fifth in the 400-meter dash (:50.01), one place ahead of freshman Nick LaBarbera, who ran :50.13. Freshman Kevin Witt competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:57.08.
In the women's meet, freshman
Emily Soeder broke the school record in the high jump as she cleared 1.61 meters (5 feet, 3 1/4 inches) to finish sixth. Freshman
Kimmy Lovett finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run (5:03.76); senior
Michaela Gildemeyer finished seventh in the 800-meter run (2:17.38); and junior
Amanda Entress was seventh in the triple jump (10.75 meters or 35 feet, 3 1/4 inches).
Nazareth also competed in the 4 x 400-meter relay and finished third in 3:56.86. That team featured Gildemeyer, freshmen
Samantha Goble and
Andrea Larnard and senior
Hannah Brackley.
The Golden Flyers, looking to get more qualifiers for the NCAA meet at St. Lawrence later this month, competes next week at the ECAC meet at Springfield.
