Updated statsELMIRA, N.Y. -- Nazarerth split a pair of non-conference men's volleyball matches Friday as part of the Elmira Invitational. The seventh-ranked Golden Flyers dropped a four-set match to second-ranked UC Santa Cruz by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20 and then came back to sweep D'Youville by scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-23.
With one regular-season match left to play Saturday against 10th-ranked Baruch, the Golden Flyers stand at 25-5 overall. The Golden Flyers travel to top-ranked Stevens next weekend to compete as the third seed in the United Volleyball Conference Tournament.
UC Santa Cruz improved to 20-5 overall as the Banana Slugs avenged an earlier defeat to the Golden Flyers. Nazareth had a .302 hitting percentage (51-16-116) and 14 total blocks, but were stymied by 23 service errors. Senior
Luke Lawatsch had a team-best 13 kills with just one hitting error in 19 attempts and junior
Tim Zyburt added 12 kills with eight digs. Freshman
Jake Kemp had 29 assists.
In the D'Youville match, senior
Brody Cord had 12 kills to contribute to a team hitting percentage of .342 (38-13-73). Junior
Chris Mahan added eight kills, while
Bobby Beeman and sophomore
Kane Wittorff each had four. Senior
Nick McDonagh had 23 assists.
