Final statsHOBOKEN, N.J. -- Nazareth's 2015 men's volleyball season ended Saturday in the semifinal match of the NCAA Division III Tournament hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. The sixth-seeded Golden Flyers lost in four sets to second-seeded Springfield by scores of 27-28, 25-21, 25-19, 25-18.
The Golden Flyers finished 28-7 overall, while Springfield improved to 25-6 and will seek its fourth straight national title Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Pride takes on top-seeded Stevens at 2 p.m. The Ducks defeated New Paltz in a five-set thriller in Saturday's other semifinal match.
Springfield's Greg Woods led all players with 28 kills. Ricardo Padilla added 16 kills and Keaton Pieper amassed 50 assists.
Tim Zyburt led Nazareth with 19 kills, including career kill No. 1,000. Freshman setter
Jake Kemp had 40 assists.
After winning the first set, Nazareth had few answers for Woods, who committed just three hitting errors in 41 attempts for a sparkling .610 hitting percentage. He had nine of the Pride's 18 kills in the second set as Springfield squared the match. He added four more kills in the third set and nine more in the fourth.
Nazareth had the lead for most of the first set, before Springfield rallied to take a 23-21 lead late in the set. Nazareth battled back to tie the set at 24-24 with the help of kills from Zyburt and
Chris Mahan. Springfield took leads of 26-25 and 27-26, but Nazareth scored the last three points of the set on two kills by Zyburt, who had six in the set, and a combined block from Mahan and Kemp.
Springfield seized control after that as the Pride pulled away. Angel Perez finished with 11 kills for the Pride and Ryan Malone had 10 digs. Joseth Irizarry had six blocks, including three solos.
Nazareth had a respectable .252 hitting percentage (56-24-127), but Springfield had 40 digs compared to Nazareth's 34.
Josh Hieb added nine kills and
Grant Levermore had eight kills and seven digs. Kemp added nine digs.
