Gildemeyer wins 800m at ROC City Classic

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth senior Michaela Gildemeyer was among the top performers for Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers continued their men's and women's track and field seasons by hosting more than 30 teams at the ROC City Classic at Golden Flyer Stadium.

Nazareth senior Michaela Gildemeyer was among the top performers for the women's team as she finished first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.01. Senior Hannah Brackley also ran well by finishing second in the 200-meter dash (:26.05) and third in the 400-meter dash (:59.02). Similar to the men's 4 x 400 relay team, the women's team also edged the school record with a first-place time of 4:01.36. It beat the 2013 record of 4:01.44. In the 4 x 800 event, Nazareth was sixth with a time of 10:40.92.

Additional top performers for the women's team included junior Taylor Pierson, who finished second in the long jump (5.15 meters or 16 feet, 10 3/4 inches) and fifth in the 100-meter dash (:13.21); junior Gabrielle LeBihan and sophomore Emily Thompson, who finished sixth and eighth respectively in the 1,500-meter run with times of 5:00.27 and 5:03.18; freshman Samantha Goble, who was fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.51); and senior Sibongile Chisi, who finished fifth in the pole vault (2.85 meters or 9 feet 4 1/4 inches).

The Golden Flyers also performed well in the high jump and triple jump events. In the high jump, freshman Emily Soeder was second with a mark of 1.52 meters (4 feet, 11 7/8 inches), and senior Kate Durr was third after recording a height of 1.47 meters (4 feet, 9 7/8 inches). Amanda Entress was eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.35 meters (33 feet, 11 1/2 inches).

In the men's meet, LaBarbera broke the stadium record in winning the 400-meter dash in :49.33. Junior Tom Sippie followed him to the finish line in third place with a time of :50.19. LaBarbera's time broke the previous record of :49.58 set by Nazareth's Ryan Ingram in 2008. For the third week in a row, junior Luis Rivera broke his own record in the hammer throw. He had a mark of 54 meters (177 feet, 2 inches). His mark last week was 51.69 meters (169 feet, 7 inches).

In addition to LaBarbera winning for the men's team, junior Brandon Vuolo set a school record in winning the discus event with with a heave of 40.61 meters (133 feet, 3 inches). Vuolo was 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 41.69 meters (136 feet, 9 1/3 inches). Junior Khiary Gayle finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 13.42 meters (44 feet, 1/4 inch) and sophomore Matt Battaglia was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.57. Nazareth's 4 x 400-meter relay team edged the nearly eight-year school-reocrd with a second-place time of 3:21.15. The previous time of 3:21.8 had stood since may 2007. The Golden Flyers' 4 x 800-meter team was seventh with a time of 8:59.36.

The Golden Flyers are in action again next Sunday when Nazareth travels to St. John Fisher for the Empire 8 Conference meet.
