Nazareth holds off Elmira in 4 sets

Golden Flyers improve to 21-4 overall

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth won a close four-set men's volleyball match Saturday over Elmira as the Golden Flyers overcame a 60-kill offensive onslaught by the Soaring Eagles to win by scores of 25-22, 19-25, 28-26, 27-25.

Seventh-ranked Nazareth, which honored seniors Brody Cord, Luke Lawatsch and Nick McDonagh before the match, improved to 21-4 overall and 4-2 in United Volleyball Conference matches. Elmira, ranked 11th nationally is 17-10 overall and 3-3 in conference matches.

Junior Tim Zyburt had 11 kills and five blocks for the Golden Flyers, who amassed 18 blocks to help thwart Elmira's attack. Freshman Jake Kemp had 20 assists and McDonagh added 14 more. Three Elmira players totaled double digit kill totals, led by Erik Griffin with 24, Mike Ellison with 16 and Dylan Kuhn with 11. Carlos Faccio had 50 assists.

Nazareth trailed late in the first set, 22-21, following a kill by Kuhn, but the Golden Flyers rallied for score the last four points on kills by Zyburt and Grant Levermore and a pair of Elmira hitting errors.

Griffin had six of Elmira's kills in the second set as the Soaring Eagles evened the match. Then Nazareth looked to be in control in the third set, going up 24-21 on a kill by Lawatsch. Four straight Elmira points gave the Soaring Eagles a 25-24 lead. The teams exchanged service errors, then Nazareth took the set on a kill by Zyburt, a combined block by Cord and Kane Wittorff and an Elmira attack error.

Nazareth also looked to be in control of set four with a 23-18 lead following a kill by Chris Mahan. Elmira recovered to tie the set at 24 and at 25. Lawatsch threw down a kill and then combined with Zyburt on a match-clinching block to give Nazareth the four-set win.

Lawatsch also had seven blocks and Wittorff had five. Rob Shade contributed 15 digs for Elmira.

Nazareth travels to New York University Saturday to close out its conference schedule with matches against NYU at 11 a.m. and MIT at 1:30 p.m.
