ResultsROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth freshman
Nick LaBarbera was named Rookie of the Meet after posting a record-breaking time Saturday to win the 500-meter dash as the Golden Flyers' track and field teams completed the second day of competition at the NYSCTC Championships at RIT's Gordon Field house.
LaBarbera's winning time of 1:05.58 was more than a second faster than the previous Nazareth record of 1:06.78, set by
Jake Lafaver at RIT two years ago. Nazareth finished in ninth place in the men's team standings with 37 points. The University of Rochester won the event with 147 points. Nazareth placed seventh in the women's competition with 47 points. Ithaca finished first with 204.5.
In the men's meet, junior
Khiary Gayle won the triple jump with a leap of 13.86 meters (45 feet, 5 3/4 inches). Sophomore
Matt Battaglia finished seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.17, a couple of ticks shy of his personal-best time of 1:58.03, from the Empire 8 Conference meet two weeks ago. Junior
Brandon Vuolo competed for Nazareth in the shot put and finished seventh with a toss of 13.58 meters (44 feet, 6 3/4 inches).
LaBarbera also ran for the Golden Flyers in the 4 x 400-meter relay that finished fifth in 3:30.60. Battaglia and fellow sophomore
Jacob Murray also competed along with freshman
Martin Dearaway.
In the women's competition, senior Michaela Gildemeyer repeated as champion in the 800-meter run with a personal-best indoor time of 2:18.21. Freshman Kimmy Lovett placed fifth in the same event in 2:23.73, nearly 10 seconds faster than her time from the Empire 8 meet two weeks ago. Gildemeyer also helped Nazareth post a school-record time of 4:03.62 to place second in the 4 x 400-meter relay. Freshmen Samantha Goble and Andrea Larnard also ran along with senior Hannah Brackley.
Goble also had a personal-best time of 1:19.85 to finish fifth in the 500-meter dash and Brackley finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of :58.56 after running :58.38 in Friday's prelims.
