Nazareth sweeps Ramapo, Medaille

Golden Flyers improve to 14-2 overall

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sixth-ranked Nazareth avenged an earlier men's volleyball defeat Saturday afternoon as the Golden Flyers dominated visiting Medaille in a three-set match by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-11. Earlier in the day the Golden Flyers defeated Ramapo in three sets by scores of 25-11, 25-17, 25-18. The Golden Flyers now stand at 14-2 overall. Medaille dropped to 4-9 and Ramapo is 6-8.

Nazareth lost to Medaille in a four-set match on its home court two weeks ago, but the Golden Flyers had no such issues Saturday in using a tidy .400 hitting percentage (33-9-60) to take command. Junior Tim Zyburt had 12 kills with just one hitting error in 17 attempts for a .647 percentage and junior Chris Mahan added six kills in eight swings for a .625 percentage. Freshman setter Jake Kemp combined 23 assists with six digs and senior Luke Lawatsch had three aces and six blocks.

Nazareth hit .435 in the first set (13-3-23) and got five kills on five swings from Zyburt, who leads the Golden Flyers with 168 kills. Zyburt added four more kills in the second set and Mahan and Grant Levermore each added three. Medaille, meanwhile, had nine hitting errors in both the second and third sets. Calvin Crosby led the Mavericks with eight kills and David Riggsby added 17 assists.

Against Ramapo, Nazareth's offensive attack controlled the match through the first two sets as the Golden Flyers converted 30 total attacks and had only two hitting errors. The Golden Flyers had a team attack percentage of .600 (13 kills, one error, 20 attempts) in the opening set. In the second set, Nazareth recorded a hitting percentage of .640 (17 kills, one error, 25 attempts). The Golden Flyers cooled to a .310 percentage (15 kills, six errors, 29 attempts) in the third set.

In the first set, Lawatsch had a team-high four kills. Zyburt and Grant Levermore each added three kills while Brody Cord recorded his first two kills. Junior Josh Hieb also converted a kill on his lone attack. Levermore amassed six kills on eight attempts in the second set. Hieb and Lawatsch each added three kills while Zyburt and Cord tallied a pair of kills apiece. Sophomore Kane Wittorff also chipped in a kill.

Cord's efficiency in the third set allowed Nazareth to pull away. The senior converted all six of his attacks into kills. Mahan added three kills. Lawatsch and Zyburt each had two kills, and Levermore and Nick McDonagh added one kill apiece.

Kemp recorded a match-high 25 assists as Nazareth's primary setter in the first two sets. McDonagh took over the primary setting duties in the third set and finished with 16 assists.

Defensively, Nazareth held the Roadrunners to a total attack percentage of only .069. Ramapo recorded 21 total kills, 16 errors, and 72 attempts over the course of the match. Lawatsch had a huge impact at the net to thwart the Roadrunners' attempts. He finished with three solo blocks and a pair of assisted blocks. Zyburt also frustrated Ramapo with a match-high seven digs. Levermore had six digs.

Spencer Shickora and Garrett Fitzsimmons each had five kills for Ramapo.Justin Feigeles finished with a team-high 15 assists and six digs.
