Men's resultsHOUGHTON, N.Y. – Nazareth's men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Empire 8 Championships at Houghton on Saturday. Senior Hannah Brackley took first in the 200-meter and 400-meter events with times of :25.98 and :58.36, respectively and was named Track Athlete of the Meet. Brackley broke the facility record in both events, and her time in the 200 also set a new school record. Her previous time was :26.49. She missed the event record by only .04 seconds. Luis Rivera took first in the 35-pound weight throw with a school-record, facility-record, and meet-record mark of 18.44 meters (60 ft., 6 in.). Rivera's previous school record was 17.69 meters (58 ft., 1/2in.).
In the men's meet, the Golden Flyers took fifth with 67 points. St. John Fisher claimed first with 122 points. Ithaca and Stevens were second and third with 87 and 79 points, respectively.
Nazareth finished fourth in the women's meet with 56.5 team points. Ithaca took first with 192.5 points, followed by St. John Fisher with 74 points, and Stevens with 68 points.
In the men's meet, Junior
Khiary Gayle was first in the triple jump with a mark of 13.35 meters (43 ft., 9 3/4 in.). Classmate
Brandon Vuolo followed Rivera in the weight throw with a third-place finish. His throw was spotted at 14.31 meters (46 ft., 11 1/2 in.). Vuolo also claimed third in the shot put with a mark of 14.12 meters (46 ft., 4 in.).
In the 400-meter dash, junior
Tom Sippie set the meet record and facility record with a time of :49.63. His school record from this season is :48.71. Freshman
Nick LaBarbera was second in the 400 with a time of :50.43, and he recorded a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of :23.07.
Sophomore
Matt Battaglia was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.03, and classmate
Jacob Murray was eighth with a time of 2:03.56. Sophomore
Richardson Pierre was sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of :7.19 seconds. In the 5,000-meter run, junior
Patrick Neureuter was ninth with a time of 16:27.59.
The Golden Flyers' 4x400 relay team crossed the line second, just .04 seconds behind Alfred. The relay of LaBarbera, Battaglia, Murray, and Sippie finished with a time of 3:30.17.
Nazareth's women's 4x400-meter relay team also broke the facility record with a time of 4:08.98. It was only a couple of tenths off the school record of 4:08.7 and about a half second off the meet record. Freshman Samantha Goble, senior Michaela Gildemeyer, freshman Andrea Larnard, and Brackley teamed to place first in the event. The women's distance medley relay also performed well with a fourth-place finish and a time of 13:13.56. The relay consisted of Gildemeyer, freshmen Sarah Williams and Kimmy Lovett, and sophomore Jamie DiSalvo.
Nazareth had a pair of top-10 finishers who finished behind Brackley in the 400. Goble was third with a time of 1:01.01 and Larnard was eighth with a time of 1:03.51.
In the 800-meter run, Gildemeyer was first with a time of 2:24.01. Lovett crossed the finish line in 10th-place with a time of 2:33.06.
In field events, junior Amanda Entress was fourth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump. She finished with a mark of 5 meters (16 ft., 5 in.) in the long jump and 10.45 meters (34 ft., 3 1/2 in.) in the triple. Senior Sibongile Chisi and freshman Emily Pawlowski competed in the pole vault. Chisi was fifth with a mark of 2.9 meters (9 ft., 6 1/4 in.), and Pawlowski was 10th with a mark of 2.45 meters (8 ft. 1/2in.).
Nazareth is in action again February 27-28th when the Golden Flyers travel to RIT for the NYSCTC Championships.
