ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Nazareth College indoor track and field squad opened up its 2015-16 season Thursday night at the RIT Early Season Invitational.
Tom Sippie took the top spot in the 400-meter dash, with a 50.78, over a full second ahead of the second place finisher.
Also winning for Nazareth was Nick LaBarbera in the 500-meter dash (1:06.35).Â
Matt Battaglia took home the 1,000-meter run in 2:37.57 while freshman Jack Wessel placed sixth (2:47.59) in the race for Nazareth.
To close out the day, LarBarbera, Battaglia, Sippie, and Jacob Murray paved the way in the 1600-meter relay with a 3:27.79.
The Golden Flyers also had a strong showing in the weight throw with Luis Rivera coming in first place (18.27 meters), Brandon Vuolo earning second (15.20 meters) and Tyler Hancock taking the fifth spot (14.57). Rivera beat the previous meet record of 17.08 meters, set back in 2011.
Vuolo also picked up a fourth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.0 meters.
In his first collegiate race, Michael-Jordan Morris clocked an 8.84 in the 60-meter hurdles, good for fifth place. Morris was also the 11th place finisher in the 400-meter hurdles (55.17).
For the women, Samantha Goble was a highlight, blowing away the field in the 500-meter dash by over three seconds in at time of 1:18.42. Teammate Andrea Larnard placed fourth (1:22.94).
Alex Walker ran to a 10th place finish in the 60-meter dash in 8.42. She also ran in the 200-meter dash with a 31st place finish (29.58).
In the 1000-meter run, Nazareth's Eileen Shea took sixth place (3:25.76).
For field action, Emily Soeder was the top scorer in the high jump with a mark of 1.58 meters. Sara Thomas tied for third place after a jump of 1.53 meters.
Amanda Entress had a solid showing with a win in the triple jump (10.35 meters) and aÂ
a sixth place (4.92 meters) finish in the long jump.
Taylor Smith (9.92 meters) and Gabby Bell (9.68 meters) were 14th and 15th, respectively in the weight throw.
The quartet of Goble, Shea, Larnard, and Alycia Atwell-Chwazik placed second in the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:20.36) in a four-team field.
Nazareth returns to action on January 16 for the RIT Invitational.Â
