Updated statsALFRED, N.Y. – The Nazareth College women's volleyball squad picked up two pivotal conference wins on Saturday in a tri-match held at Alfred University. The Golden Flyers defeated the host Saxons 25-22, 25-12, 25-18, before handing Utica a 25-18, 25-7, 25-23 in game two.
With the wins, Nazareth has now secured the No. 3 spot in the Empire 8 tournament and will travel to top-seeded Stevens on November 7/8.
Nazareth will square off against second seeded Ithaca at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, with Stevens and fourth seeded Elmira matching up at 12 p.m. The winners of the semifinal matches will play in the final at 12 p.m. on November 8 at Stevens.
In its first match against Alfred, Nazareth improved its hitting percentage each set, going from .186, to .480, and finally .550 in the third set.
Jennifer Hicks registered 13 kills on 14 attempts for a .857 attack percentage.
Carmen Sapp tied a career-high with 10 kills, while
Cady Messmer racked up nine of her own. Messmer also collected a team-high nine digs.
Hicks and Messmer each recorded 11 kills in Nazareth's three set win over Utica. In addition, Messmer led the team in digs with 10. The freshman duo of Sapp and
Kelsey Milligan each chipped in seven kills for Nazareth.
Maureen Thayer notched 71 assists on the day.
Nazareth will host the NY Challenge Tournament next Friday and Saturday.
