CANTON, N.Y. -- Despite a 22-16 advantage in shots, visiting Nazareth dropped a non-conference field hockey game at St. Lawrence Saturday as the Saints scored once in each half of a 2-1 victory over the Golden Flyers.

St. Lawrence improved to 4-8 overall, while Nazareth dropped to 6-9. Freshman Leah Good scored for the Golden Flyers off a penalty corner after time expired.

Maggie Wraight scored for St. Lawrence in the first half for a 1-0 lead. The score went unchanged until just two minutes remained in regulation, when St. Lawrence's Jamie Oriol converted a penalty stroke for her second goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.

Before St. Lawrence's second goal, Nazareth had opportunities to tie the game. First Catherine Willard had a shot in the first half that resulted in a defensive save for St. Lawrence's Alex Clark. Then with about :20 left in the half, a shot by Nazareth's Leah Good was kicked aside by Saints' defender Carly Dziekan.

Fourteen of Nazareth's shots came in the second half, but the Golden Flyers were turned away repeatedly by Saints' goalie Kim Haab, who was credited with 10 saves. With 17:30 remaining, Nazareth's Catherine Willard had a great scoring chance with an uncontested shot from the middle of the arc but hit the post and Haab was able to clear the loose ball and end the scoring threat.

Senior Lauren Devine played all 70 minutes in goal for Nazareth and made six saves. Nazareth finally broke through after a penalty corner was awarded as time expired. The penalty corner was played out and Good flipped a shot over the shoulder of Haab after Emily Prescott's initial shot to spoil the shutout attempt.

Nazareth returns to Empire 8 Conference action Wednesday when the Golden Flyers visit St. John Fisher for a 7 p.m. game.
