Updated statsROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Alfred used a 27-9 scoring run over the first seven minutes of the second half Friday to break open a close game and the Saxons held on to take an 85-76 men's basketball victory over Nazareth at the Kidera Gymnasium.
Alfred improved to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the Empire 8, while Nazareth lost its fourth straight game and stands at 4-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Junior
Nick Nadeau scored 22 points to lead Nazareth. Juniors
Maurice Mills and
Mitch Ford added 20 and 19 points respectively. Ford also collected a game-high 13 rebounds. Alfred's Dalton Walsh led all scorers with 25 points to go with a team-high 11 rebounds. Tyler Seelman added 21 and Julian Reinhart had 11.
Alfred led 30-28 after a closely contested first half before Nazareth got a pair of free throws from Ford and a basket by Mills to open the second half for a 32-30 Nazareth lead. Seelman then scored the next eight points in a 30-second span to trigger a 14-point run that put the Saxons in front to stay at 44-32. Alfred continued to keep the pressure on as the lead grew as large as 20 points, 57-37, following a basket by Walsh with 13:21 left.
Nazareth maintained some resilience and closed the gap to three points, 73-70, following a pair of free throws by Nadeau with 1:47 to go. Reinhart answered with a three-pointer on the Saxons' next possession to extend the lead back to six at 76-70. Nazareth got close again in the closing minute, pulling to within four, 78-74, after two free throws by Mills with :54 left. The Saxons preserved the win by hitting free throws as Tim Pacheco, Kevin McFall and Reinhart each sank two.
Nazareth shot 23 for 62 from the field (37.1 percent) and a season-best 24 for 26 (92.3 percent) from the free throw line. The Golden Flyers made six three-pointers with junior
Steven Soltysik hitting three for nine points. Alfred made 30 of 64 shots (46.9 percent) and 18 of 24 free throws (75 percent).
Nazareth returns to action Saturday for another Empire 8 Conference game at Utica at 4 p.m.
