Updated StatsROCHESTER, NY – The visiting Cortland Red Dragons defeated Nazareth College in a non-conference field hockey match-up 4-0. The loss evens Nazareth's record to 6-6 while Cortland improves to 7-2.
The Red Dragons got two first half goals from Alexa Sanzone to take a 2-0 lead at half-time. Sanzone's first goal came at 6:42 after collecting a rebound off of
Shannon Winney's goal-pads. She struck again less than three minutes later at 9:08 during a penalty corner opportunity.
Abigail Wentlent scored on a penalty stroke at 41:17 to put the Red Dragon's up 3-0 and Sara O'Brien rounded out the scoring at 65:17 off an assist from Emily Woods. Cortland's penalty stroke was awarded after Winney came out of goal and slide tackled a Cortland attacker.
Winney played all 70 minutes and had 18 saves in goal for Nazareth. Cortland's Amanda Perricone and Mairead Hourihan each played a half to give the Red Dragons the shut-out win. Golden Flyer
Isabel Wittmaack was also credited with a defensive save in the second half.
The Red Dragons out-shot Nazareth 27-0 and had a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Golden Flyers are home again on Saturday, October 4 for a 12 pm conference match-up against Utica College.
