Nazareth falls to Washington & Jefferson, 3-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. --Nazareth fell to visiting Washington & Jefferson 3-1 in Sunday's Empire 8 Conference field hockey game. After junior Maggie Muzio tied the score at one goal apiece early in the second half, the Presidents scored the final two goals of the contest to claim the victory.

Following the loss, Nazareth drops to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in Empire 8 contests. With the win, Washington & Jefferson improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in conference games.

Muzio scored her goal 9:30 into the second half to temporarily tie the score, 1-1. The scoring opportunity was set up by penalty corner by sophomore Kailee Coleman. Junior Catherine Willard took a long shot, and Muzio got her stick on the ball before it found the back of the Presidents' goal. Willard earned the assist on the play. It was Muzio's third goal of the season.

Washington & Jefferson took the lead early in Sunday's contest with a goal by Lauren Brown. After her initial shot was saved, Brown swatted the rebound into Nazareth's goal. Brown's opportunity followed a long shot by Gina Taglieri after Taglieri received a pass from Catherine Beaudoin on a penalty corner.

Following Muzio's goal. Brown scored her second of the game with 16:13 to play in regulation. Brown's eventual game-winning goal followed a penalty corner opportunity as she received a pass in front of the Golden Flyers' goal from Amanda Steffey. With her goals, Brown has a team-high eight goals on the season. Roughly 10 minutes later, Beaudoin secured the victory with a penalty shot after a collision at the right side of the goal. The Presidents' used a transition opportunity to pressure the Golden Flyers' defense and create the penalty shot opportunity.

Nazareth held a 13-12 edge in total shots and a 10-8 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Shannon Winney made a team-high nine saves in the Golden Flyers' net. Morgan Brozena recorded six saves to earn the victory for the Presidents.

Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 schedule Wednesday when the Golden Flyers host Elmira at 4 p.m.
