ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting William Smith scored with about four minutes to play in the first half, then added four goals in the final 21 minutes of regulation to secure the 5-0 victory in Tuesday evening's non-conference field hockey game against Nazareth.

Following the loss, the Golden Flyers drop to 5-3 overall. With the victory, the 15th-ranked Herons improve to 4-1 overall.

Junior Maggie Muzio forced William Smith's Catherine Hare to make the first save of the game with a shot on goal 4:55 into regulation. Following Muzio's shot, the Herons outshot Nazareth 16-1 during the remainder of the opening half. The Golden Flyers' defense and senior goalie Shannon Winney held William Smith scoreless until there was just over four minutes remaining in the first period. Winney made 12 saves, and sophomore Maggie Namy added a team save with about eight minutes to play in the period. William Smith eventually broke the scoreless tie following a penalty corner opportunity. On the penalty corner, the Herons' Madison Finn passed the ball to Caitlin Moran at the arc. Moran returned the ball to Finn who had slid behind the Golden Flyers' defense toward Nazareth's goal. Finn converted the scoring chance, and Moran earned an assist on the play.

Roughly 13 minutes into the second stanza, Nazareth had an opportunity to tie the game following their first penalty corner chance. Sophomore Kailee Coleman played the ball in on the penalty corner. Senior Sibongile Chisi's shot from near the center of the arc was blocked aside by the Herons' Hare. Hare's save was a turning point because less than a minute later Katie Meyer scored to stretch William Smith's lead to two goals. Alessandra Patrizio found Meyer toward the left side of the goal for the scoring opportunity.

Meyer's goal was the first of four William Smith goals in a span of 14:01. Hannah Wood, the Herons' leading scorer, scored the final three goals. On the first goal, Wood dribbled around a Nazareth defender down the left wing and put a shot into the right side of the Golden Flyers' goal. Patrizio was credited with her second assist on Wood's second goal as she passed the ball from the right side of the field through the high slot toward the left post where Wood was waiting. Wood's third goal came with 6:46 to play as she collected a loose rebound in front of the Nazareth goal and scored.

William Smith finished with overwhelming advantages in total shots (35-4) and penalty corners (15-1). Hare finished with two saves. Winney played the opening 63:27 in the Golden Flyers' net and amassed 17 saves. Sophomore Lauren Devine saw action in goal for the final 6:33 and recorded two saves.

Nazareth is in action again Sunday when the Golden Flyers host Washington & Jefferson at 12 p.m.
