Nazareth closes season with a split against RIT

Golden Flyers take game one 6-4; fall in game two 8-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth took the first game of a non-conference doubleheader against RIT on Saturday, 6-4, before falling in the second game by the score of 8-2. In game one, sophomore Carly Pike stretched the Golden Flyers' lead to 5-1 in the third inning with a two-run homer. It was her fourth home run of the season. RIT took control early in game two with a home run in the first inning and the second inning.

Following the doubleheader split with the Tigers, Nazareth closes the season with a 9-21 overall record. RIT finishes the season witha 7-27 overall record.

In game one, the Golden Flyers scored a pair of runs in the second inning then three runs in the bottom of the third to claim a 5-1 lead. The Golden Flyers took advantage of Tigers' errors in both innings to build their lead. In the second inning, junior Sophia Rhoades connected on a one-out single then scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Nicole White. Senior Emily Beckley pinch-ran for classmate Shauna Bardanis, then scored on an RIT error. With two outs, Pike connected on a two-run home run to left-center to cap Nazareth's scoring in the third inning. Senior Sarah Cipperly also scored on Pike's blast. She initially reached base on an error. Before Pike's homer, sophomore Maureen Rogers opened the inning with a single before eventually crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

The Golden Flyers added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Cipperly opened the inning with a single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pike's single pushed Cipperly to third base before Rhoades brought her home with a sacrfice fly to center.

RIT scored one run in the second and fourth innings and added a pair of runs in the seventh before Nazareth secured the victory. Sarah Wolcott scored the game's first run in the top of the second on Sierra Valentine's single. In the fourth, Alexa Farner doubled to score Amanda Cook, who started the inning with a walk. In the seventh, the first three batters reached base. Kelsey McManus began the inning with a single then crossed the plate on a double by Wolcott. Wolcott eventually scored on a ground out by Cook. Nazareth ended the inning by forcing the Tigers to hit into consecutive ground outs.

Freshman Nicole White earned the victory for her second win of the season. White pitched four innings and scattered six hits while allowing two runs. She also recorded a game-high four strikeouts. Classmate Mary Greco piteched the final three innings. Similar to White, Greco allowed a pair of runs on five hits, and she struckout one batter.

Valentine took the loss for the Tigers. She allowed seven hits and six runs, but only two runs were earned. Valentine tallied three strikeouts.

In the second game, RIT surged to a 6-0 lead through the first three innings. McManus connected on a two-run shot in the first inning to open the scoring, then Emma Sarles hit a three-run homer in the second to stretch the Tigers' lead to five runs. In the third inning, McManus crossed the plate following a throw to second trying to thwart Tori Nadow's attempted steal. The Tigers extended their lead with two runs in the sixth as Chelsea Shoemaker and McManus each scored.

The Golden Flyers found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth on Cipperly's double to left field, which scored classmate Meg DeMario. Nazareth added to its runs in the sixth inning when Nazareth's first three batters reached base. Freshman Sarah Papponetti started the inning with a single before junior Nicole Bayona drew a walk. Freshman Meghan Barry's single loaded the basses. Senior Kailey Ritch followed with a hard line drive but it was right at RIT's shortstop. DeMario flied out to senter, but it was deep enough to score Papponetti. RIT avoided further danger by forcing sophomore Maureen Rogers into a fly out.

Sophomore Danae Wetherbee took the loss for Nazareth as she allowed six earned runs and five hits in 2.1 innings. Bayona allowed two runs (one earned) in the final 4.2 innings. She also tallied three strikeouts. Ashlynn Palmitesso pitched seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) for her first collegiate victory.
