Tournament siteROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Eighth-seeded New York University dominated top-seeded Nazareth from start to finish Saturday as the Violets scored a first-round upset victory at the United Volleyball Conference Championships at Nazareth's Kidera Gymnasium. NYU won in three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-17.
The defeat dropped the Golden Flyers to 15-10 overall and most likely ended their season. NYU advances to the tournament semifinals today at 5 against Elmira, a five-set winner over Medaille in another quarterfinal match. No. 2 seed New Paltz plays No. 6 seed Stevens in the second semifinal match at 7. The UVC Championship match is Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner gains an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament at Juniata April 25-27.
NYU's Chase Klein had a match high 13 kills and setter Connor Mortland had 33 assists to pace the Violets, who avenged a regular-season loss to the Golden Flyers from March 8. The Violets had a .287 hitting percentage for the match, while Nazareth hit just .028.
NYU bolted to a 10-3 lead in the opening set and cruised behind four kills each from Klein and Colin LaPorte. NYU also had five of its seven service aces in the opening set.
Nazareth led 9-8 in the second set before NYU went on an 11-3 scoring run to take control. Klein added six more kills. The third set was similar with the score tied at 9-9 before NYU went on an 11-6 scoring run yo go up 20-15. Klein, LaPorte and Phil Bueno each had three kills and Andrew Quirk had five digs.
Grant Levermore and
Luke Lawatsch each had six kills for Nazareth and
Nick McDonagh had 20 assists.
