Second-half flurry lifts Nazareth past Hamilton, 16-11

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored six times in the third quarter and three more times in the fourth Wednesday as the 19th-ranked Golden Flyers rallied past Hamilton in a non-conference men's lacrosse game, 16-11.

The victory, on Nazareth's frozen artificial turf field, improved the Golden Flyers' overall record to 1-1, while Hamilton dropped to 0-2. Sophomore Luke Wooters scored three goals and added an assist and fellow sophomore Troy Haefele had two goals and four assists. Trevar Haefele, Chris Aycock and Drew Simoneau also scored two goals each.

Hamilton's Sam Sweet scored five of his game-high six goals in the first half as the Continentals led 8-7 after 30 minutes. Nazareth scored twice in the opening minute of the second half on goals by Wooters and Simoneau to go up 9-8 and the Golden Flyers never trailed again.

Nazareth outshot Hamilton 16-6 in the decisive third quarter and had a 15-5 edge in ground balls. Simoneau also was dominant on face-offs as he went 14-for-14 in the second half and 22-for-29 overall with 15 ground balls.

Aycock and Trevar Haefele also scored twice each in the third quarter as Nazareth led 13-10 heading into the final 15 minutes. The fourth quarter featured goals by senior Brian Wright, freshman Nick Arnold and junior Matt McDermott, each of whom netted their first goals of the season. That put Nazareth ahead 16-10 before Hamilton added a man-up score in the closing minute.

Hamilton opened the game by taking a 4-1 lead in the first eight minutes before Nazareth rallied on goals by Simoneau, Matt O'Neill and Kyle Fanning to tie the score at 4-4. The teams exchanged second-quarter goals with Sweet's goal with :22 left in the half giving the Continentals the 8-7 lead at the break.

Nazareth had sizable advantages in shots (57-29), ground balls (47-23) and face-offs (22-9). Sophomore Scott Brown had eight saves in goal for Nazareth. Hamilton's Will Driscoll made 15 saves.

Nazareth is home again Saturday for a non-conference game against St. Lawrence at 12 p.m.
