ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Medaille rallied past Nazareth by winning the fourth and fifth sets to defeat the Golden Flyers by the scores of 16-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11 in a non-conference men's volleyball match on Saturday afternoon. Nazareth sophomores
Tim Zyburt and
Grant Levermore combined for 25 of the Golden Flyers' 51 total kills.
With the loss, Nazareth slips to 14-8 overall. With the victory, Medaille improves to 13-6 overall.
In the fifth set, the Mavericks tallied seven of eight points to break a 3-3 tie into a 10-4 lead. Medaille had three blocks during the run to turn potential Golden Flyer points into Maverick points. Medaille also built its lead with a pair of kills and a pair of unforced errors by Nazareth. While the Mavericks held the Golden Flyers to a hitting percentage of .043 on seven kills and six errors, Medaille had a percentage of .278 on eight kills and only three errors.
The Golden Flyers controlled the opening set with 10 kills and only four attack errors while forcing the Mavericks to commit nine attack errors. Levermore had three kills with no errors, while Zyburt and classmate
Bobby Beeman each added two kills. Nazareth used a balanced attack as senior
Cole Hutter, and juniors
Nick McDonagh and
Luke Lawatsch contributed an additional kill. Defensively, Zyburt, Hutter, Levermore, McDonagh, and Lawatsch each recorded two assisted blocks to frustrate Medaille's offense. The Mavericks finished with a .103 hitting percentage.
In the second set, Medaille's offense responded with 14 kills and only one error for a .481 hitting percentage. Jack Hagerty finished with five kills and Jordan James added three kills. Nazareth had six pleyers record kills in the set, but no player had more than two. The Golden Flyers also had eight attack errors.
In the third set, Nazareth's defensive presence returned as the Golden Flyers held Medaille to only nine kills and six errors for a .103 attack percentage. Levermore had a solo block while McDonagh, Lawatsch, junior
Brody Cord, and sophomore
Coulton Every each added an assisted block. Offensively, Zyburt and Lawatsch had four kills and three kills, respectively, with neither player recording an attack error, and Levermore and Every chipped in a pair of kills apiece.
In the fourth set, Nazareth recorded a hitting percentage of .346 on 12 kills and three errors while Medaille had a percentage of .125 on just eight kills and five errors, but the Mavericks edged the Golden Flyers due to Nazareth's 12 service errors. Beeman led the Golden Flyers offensively with four kills on six attempts and no attack errors, and Levermore and Lawatsch also totaled five kills. McDonagh, Zyburt, and Every each added one kill.
McDonagh amassed a match-high 44 assists to direct Nazareth's offense. Zyburt (13 kills) and Levermore (12 kills) each finished in double-digits in kills while Lawatsch and Beeman added nine kills apiece. Levermore also recorded a team-high 10 digs.
Trevor Barrett finished with a team-high 13 kills for the Mavericks while David Riggsby had a team-high 39 assists and Luke Wolanin had a match-high 14 digs.
Nazareth travels to Elmira on March 30th to play Elmira and Wells before returning to the Kidera Gymnasium to host the United Volleyball Conference championship on April12th-13th.
