Nazareth falls to Baruch and Carthage in 4

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Action concluded Sunday for the Nazareth men's volleyball team at the Carthage Tournament as the Golden Flyers dropped a pair of matches to nationally ranked foes. Nazareth lost in four sets each to 14th-ranked Baruch and fourth-ranked Carthage. Scores against Baruch were 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 26-24. Against Carthage is was 25-20, 25-18, 15-14, 25-15.

Nazareth, ranked seventh nationally entering the four-match tournament dropped to 14-7 after having a seven-match winning streak snapped. Nazareth is off until Saturday when the Golden Flyers host Medaille in a non-conference match at 1 p.m.

Against Baruch, sophomore Tim Zyburt had 15 kills and four digs and sophomore Grant Levermore added 13 kills, seven digs and five blocks. Junior setter Nick McDonagh had 42 assists.

The teams split the first two sets, then Baruch broke away from a 17-17 tie to win the pivotal third set. Nazareth was within 22-21 following a kill by sophomore Chris Mahan, but the Bearcats with a kill, a block and a Nazareth service error.

In the fourth set, Nazareth led 20-19 after a kill by Zyburt, but Baruch came back to take a 24-23 lead. A combined block from McDonagh and Luke Lawatsch squared the set at 24-24, but Baruch clinched the match on kills by Chris Kaimis and Aviv Elias.

Zyburt had 11 kills against Carthage and Levermore had six of his eight kills in the first set as Nazareth won 25-20. Carthage dominated sets two through four as All-American setter Connor Wexter amassed 39 assists and Jim Schultz combined 16 kills with 10 digs.

The Red Men had hitting percentages of .481 (16-3-27) and .429 (10-1-21) to win sets two and three respectively. Nazareth, meanwhile, hit .083 (8-6-24) and .000 (8-8-25) in sets three and four.
