FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Nazareth split a pair of non-conference softball games Tuesday as the Golden Flyers watched a late rally fall short in a 2-1 loss to North Park of Illinois before rebounding to defeat Elms from Massachusetts, 7-1.
Nazareth is 2-4 overall and idle on Wednesday. The Golden Flyers resume their schedule Thursday with games against Wartburg at 9 a.m. and New Jersey City University at 11.
Freshman
Nicole White pitched well for Nazareth in the first game against North Park as she yielded just single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Trailing 2-0, Nazareth scored once in the top of the seventh as
Carly Pike singled and advanced to second on the throw to the infield. She scored Nazareth's lone run on a single by
Sophia Rhoades, who was later thrown out trying to advance to third base for the final out of the game. Pike and senior
Sarah Cipperly each had two hits for Nazareth.
In the second game, Rhoades went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to pace Nazareth's eight-hit attack. Senior
Emily Beckley also had two hits with two runs scored an an RBI. That offense was in support of sophomore
Danae Wetherbee, who pitched all seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, Nazareth erupted for four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Pike and
Maureen Rogers singled home runs and Rhoades tripled home two more. Nazareth scored three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a run-scoring double for Rhoades and RBI singles for Beckley and Maureen Ross.
