Nazareth sweeps Vassar and MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Sophomore Tim Zyburt amassed a match-high 14 kills in Nazareth's three-set victory over MIT on Saturday evening. The scores of the match were 25-23, 25-22, 25-13. It was the Golden Flyers' second match of the United Volleyball Crossover, hosted by MIT. Earlier in the day, Zyburt and classmate Grant Levermore each had six kills to lead Nazareth to a three-set sweep of Vassar. The scores of the match against Vassar were 25-20, 25-19, 26-24.

With the victories, the Golden Flyers improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in UVC matches. After losing to Nazareth, MIT dropped to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference contests. Vassar fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in UVC matches after their loss to the Golden Flyers.

Against Vassar, senior Cole Hutter and junior Brody Cord each had five kills in addition to the 12 total kills from Levermore and Zyburt. Junior Luke Lawatsch and sophomore Josh Hieb also added four kills apiece. Setter Nick McDonagh amassed 25 assists in setting up the Golden Flyers' balanced attack.

Defensively. Levermore produced seven digs while Lawatsch had a solo block and three assisted blocks. McDonagh also had three assisted blocks while Hutter, Levermore, and Cord added two assisted blocks apiece. With their tenaciousness at the net, Nazareth forced the Brewers to commit 26 hitting errors and allowed 30 kills. The Golden Flyers, meanwhile, tallied a total of 31 kills and had only 12 hitting errors.

In their match against MIT, Zyburt had seven kills and only one error in the opening set. Following his first-set error, Zyburt pounded another seven kills between the second and third sets without any errors. In the first set, Lawatsch had four kills on five attempts. Levermore and sophomore Chris Mahan also added four kills and three kills, respectively, during the first set.

Nazareth stretched its first-set lead to 15-11. An assisted block by Lawatsch and Zyburt started the run, then the tandem combined for three kills in the next five points. The Engineers took a 20-19 lead before the Golden Flyers scored three points in a row. Levermore's kill secured the victory.

In the second set, the Golden Flyers stretched their lead to 19-14 before MIT rallied with four straight points. Kills by Lawatsch and Zyburt along with an assisted block by Lawatsch and McDonagh allowed Nazareth to hold on for the win.

The Golden Flyers forced MIT into seven hitting errors and allowed only four kills to dominate the third set. Nazareth closed the set on a 15-4 run to secure the victory. The Golden Flyers' 11 kills and three hitting errors gave them a .400 attack percentage.

Nazareth resumes action against second-ranked New Paltz on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
