Tournament pageHOBOKEN, N.J. -- Nazareth won its third women's volleyball match of the weekend Saturday morning as the Golden Flyers disposed of Montclair State in four sets. Scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-13, 25-14.
The Golden Flyers improved to 25-9 overall as they competed in the New York State Regional Challenge at Stevens. Their weekend, however, came to a premature end Saturday as their scheduled match against Rowan was canceled due a leak in the roof of Stevens' auxiliary gymnasium where the match was to be played. Montclair State dropped to 23-9.
Senior
Maria Allocco had a match-high 13 kills in 22 attack attempts for a .455 hitting percentage to go with seven blocks and sophomore
Madi Wickens had 25 assists and five of the Golden Flyers' 13 service aces. Senior
Kassandra Buseck added 11 kills and sophomore
Maureen Thayer had 14 digs.
Nazareth was behind 21-19 in the opening set before rallying to score the final six points. Allocco had two kills and teamed with junior
Jennifer Hicks on a pair of blocks to help seal the set.
Montclair State turned the tables in the second set by rallying from a 20-18 deficit to score seven of the last eight points. Nazareth then dominated sets three and four with Allocco totaling five kills while Buseck and
Olivia Harrigan had four each. Sophomore
Rachel Williamson came in to record eight assists and a pair of service aces.
Nazareth will be back in Hoboken next weekend to compete for the Empire 8 Conference championship. The Golden Flyers will be the second seed and will be seeking their fourth straight title as well as their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Nazareth plays third-seeded Ithaca in Friday's conference semifinal at 5:30 p.m., while Stevens hosts Houghton. The championship match is Saturday at 3 p.m.
