Nazareth falls to Stevens, 6-0

Golden Flyers finish season 8-11 overall, including 3-5 in Empire 8

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Nazareth's field hockey team closed its regular season with a 6-0 loss to Stevens in an Empire 8 Conference contest on Saturday. The Ducks scored four times in the opening half and twice in the second half. Senior Shannon Winney amassed 10 saves for the Golden Flyers in the loss.

Following the loss, Nazareth falls to 8-11 overall and 3-5 in Empire 8 games. With the victory, Stevens improves to 10-10 overall and 5-3 in conference games.

The Ducks' Dailyn Brook did the majority of the damage against the Golden Flyers' defense as she tallied four goals. Brook leads Stevens with 16 goals and 14 assists. Brook scored her first goal less than four minutes into regulation following a penalty corner chance. On the corner, Brook put the ball into play to Erin Silvestri. Silvestri took a long shot, and Brook deflected it up and into the Nazareth goal. Stevens scored its second goal in a similar manner about 22 minutes later..

In the final five minutes of the opening period, the Ducks added a pair of goals to stretch their lead going into the break. Following another corner opportunity, Nolie Prouty dribbled close to the Golden Flyers' goal then crossed the ball to Taylor Welch, who was waiting at the right post to convert the scoring chance. Brook added the fourth goal on a shot from near the left post after she received a pass from Welch. The scoring opportunity came on a break away.

Junior Catherine Willard had a pair of shots in the first half for Nazareth. Willard's first shot was blocked and her second shot was wide. Senior Sibongile Chisi also had a shot in the opening stanza. In the second half, Chisi had the Golden Flyers' best scoring chance on a penalty stroke, but the attempt was saved by goalie Felicia Heard. Just prior to the penalty stroke, Chisi had another shot saved by Heard. Willard and freshman Kelsi Barnholt also had shots in the period, but they were both blocked by Stevens' stingy defense.

Brook and Jillian Fiebel capped the scoring as each player found the back of the net in the second half. Brook's goal was unassisted, and Silvestri was credited with her third assist of the game on Fiebel's goal.

Stevens finished with an overwhelming advantage in total shots (27-7) and penalty corner chances (26-5). In addition to Winney's 10 saves, senior Isabel Wittmaack added a defensive save late in the first half. Heard played a total of 22:19 in goal for the Ducks while Emily Stukenborg played the opening 47:41 to earn the victory.
