Updated StatsROCHESTER, NY - St. John Fisher scored three goals in each half to defeat Nazareth and remain undefeated in the Empire 8. The Cardinals improved to 9-3, 5-0 in the E8 while Nazareth fell to 6-10, 2-4.
St. John Fisher freshman Emily Markarian scored her first of four goals just 3:06 into the game. That goal was assisted by Marissa Bedella. Just two minutes later Cardinal Noelle Knox scored after deflecting a shot by Vedella who was credited with her second assist. Markarian scored again at 28:43 to give the Cardinals the 3-0 half-time lead.
After having just one first half shot, Nazareth came out strong in the second half with several scoring opportunities and getting a total of seven shots off. The Golden Flyers had a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners in the second half alone (12-8 advantage overall) but they were unable to take advantage of the opportunities.
Markarian scored back-to-back goals at 41:18 and 44:01 in the second half and Jessie Smyrski capped off the scoring with a late goal assisted by Alexis Zakala.
Shannon Winney started for the Golden Flyers and made six saves allowing just two goals.
Lauren Devine played 55:20 and finished with 12 saves and four goals against. Danielle Famolaro started in goal for the Cardinals and played 58:43 with four saves to earn the shutout. Amanda Maciol played the remainder of the game but was not challenged.
Prior to the game, Nazareth's seniors Winney,
Isabel Wittmaack, and Sibo Chisi were honored for their dedication to the field hockey program throughout their playing careers.
Nazareth plays its remaining three games on the road starting with a non-conference game at St. Lawrence on October 18 at 12 pm.
