ROCHESTER, NY - Visiting Stevens Institute of Technology held Nazareth to just 16 second-half points to defeat the Golden Flyers 71-53. Stevens improves to 8-3, 2-1 in the Empire 8 while Nazareth falls to 5-7, 1-2 in the conference.
The Golden Flyers started the game strong holding the lead several times throughout the half including a 31-28 lead with 2:34 remaining. The teams swapped the advantage six times throughout the opening stanza. Nazareth held a five point lead at 10:10, its largest lead of the game, after
Lindsey Kelly scored a jumper to make the score 24-18.
Kelly had 13 points in the first half to lead the Golden Flyers including a three-point play in the final seconds to tie the game for the eighth time, 37-37.
Anna Wicks came off the bench to contribute 11 points in the first half for the Golden Flyers. She was 3-for-7 from behind the arc.
The second half opened in similar fashion with the teams swapping the lead a couple times before the Ducks went on a 19-4 run. Stevens' Avis Benjamin scored 10 points during the run to give the Ducks a commanding 60-44 lead. The Golden Flyers were held scoreless for 4:51 mid-way through the half until
Julia Brew scored a three-pointer at 8:59 to end the scoring drought and pull the Flyers within 13 points.
Nazareth shot just 31% in the game while the Ducks shot 47% from the field. Stevens also had a 52-29 advantage rebounding. The Ducks were led by Benjamin who had a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds. Brittany Washington also scored 11 points off the bench for Stevens while Kaitlyn Astel finished with 10.
Kelly led Nazareth with 15 points,
Veronica Peck had 10 points and six assists, and
Julia Brew finished with nine points.
Hannah Runyon led Nazareth with six rebounds.
The Golden Flyers host Hartwick College Saturday at 4 pm and plays home again next weekend against Utica on January 17 at 8 pm and Ithaca January 18 at 4 pm.
