ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Host Nazareth gained its first women's soccer victory of the 2013 season Friday as the Golden Flyers scored once in each half of a 2-0 non-conference win over Geneseo. The victory lifts Nazareth to 1-1-1 overall and drops Geneseo to 1-2-0.
Sophomore
Danielle Wilkin and junior
Kaitlyn Sowyrda each had a goal for the Golden Flyers, who visit Brockport Saturday for another non-conference game at 1:30 p.m.
In the first half of play Nazareth came out hard and controlled possession. Though controlling play, the Golden Flyers did not score until the 34th minute. The goal started with a short corner kick from junior
Tyler Carr, who found the foot of teammate
Elizabeth Howell. Howell lofted the ball into the box, finding the head of Wilkin, who was able to beat Geneseo keeper Julia Sanger for her first career goal. The Golden Flyers out-shot the Knights 9-4 in the first 45 minutes.
There was no change in rhythm in the second half. Nazareth came out hard, smart, and ready to play. The Flyers stayed strong on offense and defense, earning a total of nine shots, and only allowing three. Senior goalkeeper
Bethany Novak, making her first start of the season, made a big save when Geneseo's Amanda Gray was able to slip through the Nazareth defense and earn a one-on-one opportunity. Novak came off her line and smothered the ball at Gray's feet. Novak totaled four saves for the Flyers.
In the 70th minute, Sowyrda was awarded a goal after Carr ricocheted a shot off the cross bar. Junior
Tori Ryan recovered the ball, helping Sowyrda to bury the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
