ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Freshman
Elisa Marchione scored the game-winning goal with 3:36 to play in regulation Saturday to lift visiting Nazareth to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Hartwick.
The Golden Flyers rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win their second Empire 8 Conference game of the season as they improved to 5-2-2 overall. Hartwick is 3-3-3 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play. It was Nazareth's 17th straight victory over the Hawks, who have not won since 1987 after winning the first four games of the all-time series.
"I was very pleased with our effort," said Nazareth Coach
Gail Mann, who didn't share that sentiment following Wednesday's 2-0 loss to RIT. "Hartwick is a much improved team with some great athletes, so I'm happy that we were able to come back against them."
It appeared that long drought might be broken after Hartwick's Mary Morrison scored on a header off a corner kick less than four minutes into the game.
Nazareth applied pressure and ended up with a 14-4 overall edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Flyers couldn't score, however, until the 61st minute as senior
Olivia Derleth delivered her team-leading third goal of the season off an assist from
Julia Teran Pulford, who began the threat off a corner kick.
The score stayed tied 1-1 until Marchione converted her second goal of the season after receiving a through pass from
Katie Trainor, who gained the assist. Trainor's pass created a one-on-one for Marchione against Hartwick keeper Hope Brown and Marchione slotted a shot that settled inside the far post.
"It was a great goal, a very composed goal,' said Mann.
Senior
Bethany Novak played in goal for Nazareth and didn't have to make a save. Hartwick's Hope Brown had six saves.
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday for a non-conference game at the University of Rochester at 7 p.m.
