Nazareth edges Elmira for third straight win

Wazenkewitz scores game-winner with :21 left in regulation

PINE CITY, N.Y. -- Senior Sarah Wazenkewitz scored the game-winning goal with :21 left in regulation Saturday as visiting Nazareth won its third straight field hockey game by defeating Elmira, 3-2.

The Golden Flyers evened their overall record at 3-3 and improved to 2-0 in Empire 8 Conference action. Elmira dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference games.

Nazareth had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Elmira rallied each time. Wazenkewitz, though, scored her team-leading fo7rth goal of the season with time wind down in regulation as she knocked in a rebound of her own shot that was blocked by an Elmira defender.

Senior Jordan Ritchie scored an unassisted for for Nazareth in the first half to give the Golden Flyers the lead. Elmira answered early in the second half on an unassisted goal by Alli Gilbert to tie the score.

Nazareth regained the lead in the 54th minute when sophomore Maggie Muzio scored unassisted for her third goal of the season. Elmira tied the score again in the 60th minute on a goal by McKenna Light. Then with overtime looming, Wazenkewitz came through for Nazareth.

The Golden Flyers had a 20-15 advantage in shots and a 12-9 edge in penalty corners. Junior goalie Shannon Winney had six saves.

Nazareth plays again next Saturday at Utica at 3:30 p.m.
