PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Freshman Luke Wooters
scored six goals and junior Collin Clark
scored three times with one assist Wednesday as Nazareth clinched the Empire 8 Conference regular-season title in men's lacrosse with a 13-8 victory over St. John Fisher at Growney Stadium.
Nazareth improved to 11-4 overall with its fifth straight win. The Golden Flyers are 6-0 in conference play. It was their 11th victory over the Cardinals in 12 overall meetings. Fisher dropped to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the E8.
Nazareth closes out its regular-season schedule at home Saturday against Elmira at 1 p.m. Fisher travels to Utica and needs a victory to claim the fourth seed in the E8 Tournament. A Fisher victory in that game would set up a rematch in the first round of the E8 playoffs Wednesday at Nazareth. Ithaca travels to Stevens Saturday for a game that will determine the second and third seeds for next week's tournament.
Wednesday's game marked the third six-goal game of the season for Wooters, who has a team-best 45 for the season to go with 61 points. In addition to Wooters and Clark, Trevar Haefele
scored two goals and added an assist and his brother Troy Haefele
had a goal and three assists. Junior Chris Aycock
also scored a goal.
Nazareth led 3-2 after one quarter and then scored five goals in a three-minute stretch of the second quarter to go up 8-2 and were in control the rest of the way.
Clark had all three of his goals in the first quarter, with the last two coming in a span of :51 as Nazareth led 3-2. In the second quarter, neither team scored until under five minutes remained when Troy Haefele
converted a man-up opportunity off a pass from Clark for the Golden Flyers. Just 20 seconds later, Wooters scored his first goal of the game when he intercepted a pass off a Fisher clearing attempt and scored into an empty net.
Then just :23 after that, Wooters scored again off an assist from Nick Loscalzo
to extend Nazareth's lead to 6-2. Goals by Wooters and Trevar Haefele
closed out the half with Nazareth up 8-2.
Wooters scored again in the opening minute of the third quarter -- Nazareth's eighth goal in a row -- to erase any Fisher comeback plans. Trevar Haefele and Aycock also scored in the quarter as Nazareth was ahead 11-6. Wooters added his fifth and sixth goals of the game early in the fourth quarter as Nazareth regained its seven-goal cushion before Fisher scored twice late.
Nazareth had a 39-25 advantage in shots and a 31-27 edge in ground balls. Freshman goalie Scott Brown
made five of his six saves in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Drew Simoneau
, who has been dominant on faceoffs and ground balls this season, was outdueled by Fisher's Ryan Freije, who won 17 of 25 draws. Nazareth, however, still managed to control time of possession as the defense, spearheaded by Mark Pinski
, Jerry Chasteen
, A.J. Small
, Jonathan VanOrden
, Greg Wagner
and Chris Peterson
, forced 26 turnovers.
