ALFRED, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth held on Tuesday for a 12-10 Empire 8 Conference win over Alfred in a men's lacrosse game that was originally started April 10 at Merrill Field. A lightning strike forced suspension of the game with the score tied 6-6 at halftime.
The teams reconvened Tuesday to play the third and fourth quarters and the Golden Flyers prevailed as junior
Chris Aycock and freshman
Troy Haefele each scored twice. The victory boosted Nazareth's overall record to 9-4 and enabled the Golden Flyes to remain unbeaten in conference play at 4-0. Alfred dropped to 7-4 overall and 1-4 in the E8.
Nazareth scored three times in the third quarter, including two goals from Aycock, whose tally with 2:24 left in the period put Nazareth ahead to stay at 9-8.
Troy Haefele scored just nine seconds into the fourth quarter after
Drew Simoneau won the faceoff and
Trevar Haefele followed with a man-up goal off an assist from Aycock to give Nazareth an 11-8 advantage.
Alfred scored twice to close within 11-10, but the Golden Flyers got an unassisted score from
Chris Peterson with :10 left to close out the scoring.
Trevar Haefele was credited with four goals, while his brother Troy had three goals and three assists. Simoneau and
Collin Clark also had goals for the Golden Flyers.
The originally scheduled game was tied 6-6 as each team scored three times in the first and second quarters.

Simoneau, the Empire 8 Player of the Week, posted more impressive numbers from his faceoff position as he won 21 of 25 draws and scooped up 17 ground balls. He now has 145 ground balls, breaking the single-season mark held by Terry Goetz since 1995. Freshman goalie

Nazareth plays again Saturday at home against sixth-ranked Stevens at 1 p.m. The game will be played on Nazareth's upper field, which served as the Golden Flyers' home venue from 1986 through 2004.
