Nazareth downs D'Youville in 3

Golden Flyers improve to 23-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Top-ranked Nazareth surged to its 23rd straight men's volleyball victory Wednesday as the Golden Flyers recorded a three-set sweep of United Volleyball Conference rival D'Youville. Scores were 25-19, 25-21, 25-22.

The Golden Flyers, the only unbeaten team in Division I or Divison III, is 23-0 overall and 12-0 in conference play. The Spartans are 11-12 overall and 3-8 in the UVC.

Senior Robert Kraft, the Division III leader in hitting percentage, posted nine kills in 13 attempts for a .692 percentage. Freshmen Tim Zyburt and Grant Levermore also had nine kills each from their outside hitting positions. Sophomore middle blocker Luke Lawatsch contributed 10 kills without a hitting error in 12 attempts. Freshman Josh Hieb delivered five kills in 12 attempts and senior setter EJ Wells-Spicer had 31 assists.

Kraft had six of his kills in seven attempts as Nazareth easily won the first set. Zyburt added six more kills and sophomore Nick McDonagh had 10 assists as the Golden Flyers won the second set. Lawatsch took over in the third set with five kills in seven attempts and Wells-Spicer had 16 assists to seal the match.

Nazareth plays four more matches this weekend at the Purple and Gold Invitational. The Golden Flyers host Wells and Rivier Friday at 4 and 6 p.m. respectively and then play D'Youville and Ramapo Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
