Luke Lawatsch had 10 kills in 13 attempts and senior
Robert Kraft added nine kills and five blocks for visiting Nazareth Friday as the second-ranked Golden Flyers recorded a three-set sweep of third-ranked Juniata in a non-conference men's volleyball match. Scores were 25-20, 26-24, 25-22.
The Golden Flyers kept their perfect record intact at 16-0, while Juniata dropped to 12-6. Nazareth is home for a pair of non-conference matches Saturday. The Golden Flyers play Penn State Altoona at 3, followed Milwaukee School of Engineering at 5:30 p.m.
The Golden Flyers also got 12 kills from freshman
Tim Zyburt, nine from freshman
Grant Levermore and six from sophomore
Brody Cord. Senior setter
EJ Wells-Spicer had 42 assists.
The Golden Flyers trailed early in the first set before rallying to take control. Zyburt had seven kills in eight attempts and Wells-Spicer had 17 assists in the first set. Nazareth hit .850 in the set with 18 kills against just one hitting error in 20 swings.
The second set was tighter and found Nazareth trailing 24-23 following a Zyburt attacking error. Nazareth took the set by scoring the next three points as Kraft recorded a kill and then teamed with sophomore
Nick McDonagh for blocks on the final two points.
The third set was tied at 17-17 before Nazareth scored three straight points, including another kill by Kraft, to pull away. Lawatsch and Zyburt each had kills to bring Nazareth closer to victory. A service error enabled Nazareth to gain the 24th point, then Kraft and senior
Alex Houghtalen combined for a block on match point. Kraft had four kills and three blocks in the final set and Lawatsch added four more kills.
