Nazareth opens season at Brockport Invitational

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Nazareth opened its 2013-14 track and field season Saturday at the Brockport Invitational. No team scoring was kept, but the Golden Flyers posted several strong individual performances, including three school records.

In the women's meet, sophomore Taylor Pierson broke her own school record in the 60-meter dash with a preliminary clocking of 8.19 seconds. That topped her previous best time of 8.23 set last season. Pierson eventually finished fourth with a final time of 8.24. Junior Sibongile Chisi also broke her own school record in the pole vault as she cleared 3.00 meters (9 feet, 10 inches) to finish in eighth place.

In the men's meet, sophomore Luis Rivera shattered his own school record in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 14.44 meters (47 feet, 5 1/2 inches). He broke his previous mark of 41 feet, 1 1/2 inches by more than six feet.

Other top performers in the women's meet included junior Michaela Gildemeyer finishing third in the 1,000-meter run (3:11.47); Pierson finishing second in the long jump (5.28 meters, 17 feet, 4 inches); freshman Kelsey Hill finishing fifth in the triple jump (10.17 meters or 33 feet, 4 1/2 inches); grad student Jessica Hogan placing eighth in the weight throw (11.49 meters or 37 feet, 8 1/2 inches); and sophomore Amanda Entress placing eighth in the long jump (4.94 meters or 16 feet, 2 1/2 inches) and sixth in the triple jump (9.99 meters or 32 feet, 9 1/2 inches).

Nazareth also placed third in the 4 x 200-meter relay with the foursome of Pierson, Entress, Chisi and freshman Alex Walker.

In the men's meet, senior Jake Lafaver won the 1,000-meter run with a winning time of 2:42.20. His twin brother Zack Lafaver was fourth in the same race (2:47.76) and freshman Matt Battaglia was sixth (2:48.62).

Sophomore Khiary Gayle finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.30 meters (43 feet, 7 3/4 inches) and sophomore Brandon Vuolo was 11th in the weight throw (11.92 meters or 39 feet, 1 1/4 inches) and 14th in the shot put (11.55 meters or 37 feet, 10 3/4 inches).
