Stevens blanks Nazareth, 5-0

No. 4 Ducks advance to Empire 8 title match

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- Fourth-ranked and top-seeded Stevens made quick work of visiting Nazareth Wednesday in a semifinal men's soccer match-up of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. The Ducks built a three-goal first-half lead and went on to take a 5-0 victory over the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth completed the 2013 season with an overall record of 6-11 after losing to Stevens for the second time this season. Stevens also defeated Nazareth, 4-0, in a regular-season match Oct. 5. Stevens improved to 15-1-1 overall and will host the winner of Wednesday's other semifinal match between Utica and Ithaca. The championship game is Saturday at 5 p.m. in Hoboken.

Stevens outshot Nazareth 17-6 and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. The Ducks got goals from five different players, including the first one of the game from Carson Pryor, who leads the team with 12 goals and 27 points. Nick DeFelice and Zeke Hemme each scored in the first half to give the Ducks a commanding advantage.

Nazareth had four of its six shots in the second half, but the Ducks used three goalkeepers who combined for the team's 10th shutout of the season. The Ducks have allowed only seven goals all seasaon. Kevin Calloway and Christian Grapel scored for Stevens in the second half as both teams emptied their benches.

Senior Luke Elston accounted for two of Nazareth's shots. Scott Duarte, Ben Garcia, Ramez Al-Hebshi and Blake Owens also had shots.

Freshman Nate Ripic played most of the game in goal and surrendered all five goals in addition to making five saves. Junior J.P. Horan played the final 26 minutes.
