ROCHESTER, NY - The visiting Houghton Highlanders defeated Nazareth 1-0 in a non-conference field hockey match-up. The Golden Flyers fall to 4-7 while the Highlanders improve to 3-7.
The first half saw a lot of mid-field action with Houghton getting off just five shots and Nazareth just one.
Houghton's Hannah Zgrablich broke the scoreless tie 13 minutes into the second half to give the Highlander's the win. Zgrablich scored after collecting a rebound off of Nazareth's
Mary Greco's goal pads after she made a save on a penalty corner shot. It was Zgrablich's first goal of the season.
Nazareth had two scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the game.
Sarah Wazenkewitz almost tied the game up with 3:30 left in regulation when she fired a shot into the top of the goal on a penalty corner. However, the shot was deemed to high and the goal was not allowed. Just a minute later the Golden Flyers were awarded a penalty corner and
Jordan Ritchie attempted a shot off the goalkeeper's pads but was unable to get past her.
Houghton out-shot Nazareth 12-5 and had a 11-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Mary Greco played all 70 minutes in goal and made seven saves for Nazareth. Houghton's Emily Thompson had two saves to earn the shutout win.
Nazareth travels to St. John Fisher on Tuesday, October 15 for a 4 pm game. The Golden Flyers have two home games remaining on Friday, October 18 against St. Lawrence College and Sunday, October 20 vs. Stevens at 12 pm.
