ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Rochester edged Nazareth 1-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game on Tuesday evening. Senior
Bethany Novak had four saves for the Golden Flyers. Classmate
Olivia Derleth finished with a team-high four total shots, including two shots on goal to lead Nazareth's offense.
With the loss, the Golden Flyers drop to 5-3-2 overall. With the victory, the Yellowjackets improve to 5-3-1 overall.
Rochester's Jessica Smith scored the game's only goal at the 58:06 mark to break the scoreless tie. Smith's goal was a 12-yard shot that found the bottom right corner of the goal after she received a pass from Lee Stagg. It was Smith's ninth goal of the season. No other Rochester player has scored more than two goals through the Yellowjackets' first nine games.
Toward the end of regulation, Nazareth seemed to take momentum as the Golden Flyers tallied the last four shots of the game. In the 78th minute, Derleth's shot slid through the fingers Rochester's goalkeeper, Aubrey Jacks, and hit the underside of the crossbar, but never crossed the goal line. Jacks kept Nazareth off the scoresheet in the final four minutes by saving another shot by Derleth and an attempt by junior Kaitlin Sowyrda. With about seven minutes to play in regulation, junior
Tori Ryan's shot was off the mark.
Junior
Ashtin Argentieri and freshman
Michaela Soules each had shots in the opening 13 minutes of the second stanza before Smith scored.
In the first half, Smith nearly scored off a corner kick in the opening minute, but the Golden Flyers received help from the post. Nazareth's defense held Rochester to only three first-half shots. The Golden Flyers' best opportunity in the opening 45 minutes was about 15 minutes into regulation when freshman
Elisa Marchione's 20-yard shot was blocked by a defender.
Nazareth finished with a 13-10 advantage in total shots, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Rochester held a 2-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Jacks made six saves to earn the shutout, which was the first of her career.
The Golden Flyers are in action again on October 8th, when Nazareth travels to Houghton. The Golden Flyers return to Nazareth on the 12th to begin a three-game homestand against conference rivals Stevens, Elmira, and Ithaca.
