GENESEO, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth fell to Geneseo 2-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights scored one goal in the opening four minutes to claim the early lead, then they secured the victory with an insurance goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Freshman
Nate Ripic tallied a career-high 10 saves for the Golden Flyers. He had recorded eight saves in contests against Cortland and Swarthmore.
Following the loss, Nazareth drops to 4-5 overall. Following the victory, Geneseo improves to 5-4-1 overall. The Knights' victory continues Geneseo's three-game winning streak.
Ryan Yurchak scored the opening goal only 3:45 into regulation. Yurchak's scoring chance was set up by Stanley Egbuchulam. It was Yurchak's third goal of the season. Egbuchulam also assisted on Craig Schackner's second goal of the season, which came with 9:45 to play in regulation to solidify the victory.
The Knights' tenacious defense held the Golden Flyers to five shots on goal. Seniors
Scott Duarte,
Jason Renfro, and
Tommy Rocco each recorded a shot on goal as did sophomore
Kieran McCoy and freshman
Dylan Pettit. Renfro, Pettit, and senior
Simon Mounsdon each added one shot that was off goal as well.
Geneso finished with a 24-8 advantage in total shots while Nazareth had a 5-4 edge in corner kick opportunities, including a 4-1 advantage in the first half. The Golden Flyers were without senior forward
Ryan Foley, who is continuing to nurse an injury. Foley still leads the team with four goals on the year, and he earned Player of the Week honors in September.
The Golden Flyers resume their Empire 8 schedule on October 5th with a 12 p.m. contest against 10th-ranked Stevens. Nazareth returns home on October 8th to play Hobart in a non-conference match.
