ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Hartwick outscored Nazareth 35-18 in the second half Friday to break open a close game and the Hawks went on to take a 62-44 women's basketball victory over the Golden Flyers in Empire 8 Conference action.
Hartwick improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Nazareth dropped to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the E8.
Clinging to a one-point lead, 27-26, at halftime, Hartwick used a 10-2 run in the first five minutes of the second half to extend the lead to 37-28. Nazareth, meanwhile, made just four baskets in the second half in 21 attempts, including just one three-pointer.
Freshman
Lindsey Kelly led Nazareth with 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior
Erica Shaw added all eight of her points in the first half to keep the game close.
Freshman Brittany Dumas led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds for Hartwick, which made 23 of 57 shots overall and 13 of 15 free throws. Juniors Lee Arduini and Maria Foglia each scored 10 points and junior Kate Purcell had nine.
Nazareth opened the game with a 12-4 scoring run to take an early advantage. Hartwick rallied, however, to take a four-point lead, 27-23, following two free throws by Foglia with :29 left in the half. Nazareth's
Megan Morrison hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half for Nazareth to make it a one-point game, 27-26, at the break.
The Hawks never trailed after that and the lead continued to grow in the second half, reaching 18 points on two occasions.
Both teams return to action Saturday. Hartwick visits Houghton and Nazareth hosts Stevens. Both games start at 4 p.m.
