HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Junior
Brad Ford scored 17 points to lead a five-player contingent in double figures for visiting Nazareth Tuesday as the Golden Flyers held on for an 81-75 men's basketball victory over Houghton.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 12-8 overall. Houghton dropped to 0-19. It was Nazareth's second win of the season over the Highlanders.
Ford also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Golden Flyers, who led 39-38 at halftime but trailed 62-61 with less than eight minutes to go. Senior
Tyshun Stephens scored 16 points, juniors
Scott Hayford and
Jack Giles had 14 and 13 respectively and freshman
Maurice Mills scored 11.
With the game tied at 50-50 with 13 minutes left, Nazareth scored eight straight points to go up 58-50.
Dan Waldbillig made two free throws, while
Brad Ford and Mills each sank three-point shots. Houghton, however, proved resilient and took a 62-61 lead on a three-pointer by Seth Shay with 7:49 to go.
Nazareth recovered and finally regained the lead for good, 67-65, on a pair of free throws by Stephens with 5:56 left. The game stayed close, but Nazareth sealed the win by sinking free throws down the stretch. Stephens made two with 1:18 to go, then
Vinny Amuso hit one and Ford hit two more to extend the lead to 78-70 with :26 left. Giles hit three more in the last 14 seconds.
Nazareth hit 22 of 56 shots overall, including 10 of 25 shots from three-point range. The Golden Flyers also went 27 for 39 from the foul line.
Chris Confair scored a game-high 21 points for the Highlanders, who were outrebounded by Nazareth 50-31. Hayford and Mills each grabbed eight rebounds for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule with a home game Friday against Ithaca at 8 p.m.
