ROCHESTER, NY - Washington & Jefferson College downed Nazareth 5-1 in an Empire 8 field hockey game Saturday afternoon. The President's scored three first half goals en route to their first E8 win of the season and improved to 2-0 overall while Nazareth fell to 0-1 in the E8 and 1-2 overall.
The President's Amanda Pflumm found the back of the goal just 1:05 into the game to score her second goal of the season. Arielle King followed that up just two minutes later to give W&J an early 2-0 lead. Erin Barno scored off a Catherine Villa assist at 30:43 to close out the first half.
Nazareth's
Maggie Muzio scored her second goal of the season at 42:58 off a centering pass from
Tessa Knapp to put the Golden Flyers on the board, 3-1. W&J regained its three goal lead when King scored again at 44:41. Catherine Beaudoin rounded out the scoring for the Presidents with a goal at 54:26.
Washington & Jefferson out-shot Nazareth 20-15 and had a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Shannon Winney played all 70 minutes in goal and made nine saves for Nazareth. Morgan Brozena had eight saves for the President's.
Nazareth takes to the road for its next three games starting with a non-conference game at Brockport on September 11th at 4 p.m. They return home September 22 for a 1 p.m. game vs. Utica.
