ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore Kaitlyn Sowyrda and junior Olivia Derleth each netted second-half goals for host Nazareth Wednesday as the Golden Flyers defeated Houghton in an Empire 8 Conference women's soccer match, 2-0.

The Golden Flyers improved to 5-2-3 overall, including 1-1-1 in E8 games. Houghton in 5-5 overall and 1-2 in conference games.

Nazareth had an 18-7 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the game remained scoreless until the 78th minute. A free kick by Sarah Eichelberger deflected off Tori Ryan and wound up on the foot of Sowyrda, who kicked into an open goal for her first score of the season.

About five minutes later, Eichelberger broke loose on the right wing and crossed the ball into the box, where Derleth converted for her fourth goal of the season.

Each team substituted freely throughout the game with Houghton using 25 players and Nazareth 22. Junior Abbie Carey played all 90 minutes in goal for the Golden Flyers and had four saves for her third shutout of the season.

Nazareth resumes its conference schedule Saturday at Elmira at 1 p.m.
