ROCHESTER, NY - Visiting #15 William Smith College scored three straight second half goals to break a 1-1 tie and go on to defeat Nazareth 4-2 in field hockey. The Herons improve to 7-1 while Nazareth falls to 1-7.
Melanie O'Connor scored an unassisted goal at 6:53 into the game to give the Herons an early 1-0 lead. Kailee O'Hara answered with an unassisted goal of her own less than three minutes later at 9:44. The score remained 1-1 until the second half.
William Smith's Annie Kietzman scored her first of two goals at 45:46 on a penalty corner. She was assisted by Melanie O'Connor. Kietzman scored again off a Madison Finn assist at 54:39 to give the Heron's a 3-1 lead. Taylor Cappello rounded out the scoring with a goal at 66:42 to push the Heron's ahead 4-1.
The Golden Flyers scored off a penalty corner with just two seconds remaining on the clock to make the final 4-2. The goal came from O'Hara and was assisted by
Tessa Knapp.
William Smith had a 23-7 advantage in shots and 14-5 lead in penalty corners. Catherne Hare made four saves in the win for the Heron's while
Shannon Winney played a great game in goal for Nazareth making 11 saves. Defender
Haley Potter was also credited with a defensive save.
The Golden Flyers travel to Stevens on Saturday, September 29 for an 11 am game before returning home on October 2 to host Cortland at 4 p.m.
