ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth College Golden Flyers defeat the RIT Tigers 1-0 Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium in a women's soccer match. The victory lifts the Golden Flyers to 4-1-3 overall and drops the Tigers to 4-3. The Golden Flyers have not lost to the Tigers since 1996 and has a record of 20-0-2 in the 16-year stretch.
The first half of the game was dominated by the Golden Flyers as they outshot the Tigers 4-1, had three corner kicks to RIT's two, and were able to capitalize on an opportunity to give them a 1-0 lead. The goal came in the 38th minute of play when Nazareth was awarded a corner kick. Freshman
Mel Gettys soared a ball into the box where senior Kassandra Prustsman deflected the ball to the inside near post. The goal was the first of the season for Prutsman and the assist was the second for Gettys.
In the second half RIT came out fired up and ready to strike back. The play was competitive, but the Tigers edged the Golden Flyers in shots (11-3), corners (4-1) and scoring opportunities. Nazareth was able to fight off the Tigers by playing outstanding defense, with the backline only allowing predictable shots for junior
Abbie Carey to clean up. Carey finished the game with five to record her second shutout of the season, lowering her goals-against average to a solid 0.84.
