ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Hours after attaining their first national ranking since the end of the 2006 season, Nazareth's men's soccer team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as visiting RIT scored once in each half for a 2-0 non-conference win over the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth, ranked 19th nationally in the NSCAA/Continental Tires poll, dropped to 5-1 overall, while RIT improved to 5-2.
The game began in bright sunshine at Golden Flyer Stadium, but the weather took a turn for the worse midway through the first half as high winds and driving rain impacted the quality of play. RIT took advantage in scoring the game's first goal in the 40th minute.
Nazareth goalie #J.P. Horan# made the initial save on a shot by RIT's Jon Rosebrook, but the rebound squirted loose and Andy Fleckenstein knocked it into the net for the Tigers for his first goal of the season.
In the second half, RIT's John Kaddo scored his first goal of the season seconds after entering the game as a substitute in the 63rd minute. He took advantage of a Nazareth defensive breakdown to score unassisted.
Nazareth had chances in the second half when the weather returned to normal as
Anthony Calarco,
Ryan Foley and
Mama Amar each had shots on goal that were saved by RIT keeper Sean Conway, who was credited with his second shutout of the season. Overall, though, the Tigers were able to neutralize the Golden Flyers' high-powered offense that came into the game averaging better than three goals per game.
Nazareth returns to Empire 8 Conference action this weekend as the Golden Flyers visit Elmira for a 1 p.m. game.
